Perfectly preened skin for party season

November 24, 2016

There is great satisfaction in buying and unwrapping a gorgeously packaged ‘miracle’ face cream or body butter for the first time, but did you know there are a whole host of natural ingredients found in your cupboards that arguably do the same job (without the hefty price tag)?

Here are a host of easy-to-make treatments costing a fraction of the price which use natural ingredients found readily in the home.  Avocado, olive oil, honey, sugar and eggs will become your new weapons of choice (granted they don’t last as long on the shelf as shop-bought products but for the amount of money they could save you we think ‘they’re worth it.’)

Olive oil make-up remover
Olive oil, contrary to increasing the levels of oil on your skin, actually dissolves excess oil naturally, helping to combat greasy skin.  It also works wonders on removing make-up, including mascara, leaving you feeling fresh-faced.  Mix olive oil
with a bit of castor oil for best results.

Coconut milk body cream
Coconut milk is rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and natural proteins which contribute to smooth and
radiant skin.  Keep full fat coconut milk in the fridge for a few days and it will thicken up to create a soothing body cream, keeping skin supple and reducing dry patches. Popular wellness blog Hello Glow also has lots of other recipes for using this nutritious nut.

Sugar and honey exfoliator
Beauty industry experts may frown upon sugar for giving us spots, dark patches and wrinkles but by using it on the outside of the skin it makes an excellent exfoliator, helping it to draw in moisture and replenish cells. Make a quick exfoliator by mixing brown granulated sugar with honey and rub into the skin before rinsing.  You can add olive oil and aloe vera gel for extra nutrients if you have time.

Face masks
Whether you have oily, dry or blotchy skin, Beauty Hacks has done a round-up of the 10 best pick-me-up face mask recipes to get your skin glowing in time for party season.

Lip Balm

Natural shaving cream
This recipe for chemical-free shaving cream can be stored for up to 1 month in a jar.  Swap the essential oil* for lavender which is kind to skin especially if you have spots or eucalyptus for skin that is prone to infection.
